Creating a good presentation is more than just throwing together a bunch of slides. Not everyone knows how to make a good presentation. Whenever you are making a powerpoint presentation, make sure you create a good presentation that stands out.
Planning Before You Start
Planning is the most important and very first step for any kind of work. Before you start on any presentation, you always put yourself into a deep dive of research and planning to ensure that your designs are meaningful and in-demand.
We perform research and create a mood board before we even think about designing in earnest. We also use Pinterest, behance, dribbble to collect various references for inspiration.
An hour of planning can save you 10 hours of doing
Always use your own customised template to create presentation
Sometimes using predefined themes can reduce your effort and save your time, But it will never convey your thoughts and emotions to the viewer. To connect with your audience/viewer it is necessary to create or follow your own brand guidelines or create custom templates which reflect your thoughts and emotion of your presentation or brand.
The point here is that putting brand essence to the presentation makes a much stronger statement.
Always try to use 16:9 dimension for presentation
Before you decide on your slide dimension, you have to consider the size of the room, your screen size, the audience, and the content of your slides.
There is no hard and fast rule on the best slide dimension. I would prefer to use the widescreen (16:9) instead of the standard (4:3) dimension.
Why (16:9)?
Because I will have more room to spread out my content. Who doesn’t like a little extra space? With a wider slide, you have more ways to express yourself and enough room to help the audience digest your message/contents. Just like your TV and laptop screen is getting bigger and wider by the day, so are our slide dimensions.
Always go Minimal, because less is more
Keep your content simple & minimal! Your design, photos, and text should work to emphasize the presentation points, not distract from them. Try to keep all text as simple as possible, so the audience can stay engaged in the spoken presentation.
Use of Photography/Visuals
Use visuals to tell your story. Even when you use visuals like images, they should support your content, not or overpower them. Trust your visuals to tell your story–that’s where the power lies. I can wow you with some amazing statistics like 90% of the information transmitted to your brain is visual, or presentations with visuals are 43% more effective. But really, you already instinctively know the power that visuals have to tell a story.
Always focus on your Typography
Non-designers frequently stress out about finding the proper typeface for a presentation, and for good reason. The right font can make or break your presentation. Typography is a major art form in the design world and it can really set the stage for what you want to say.
Instead of browsing your font list and looking for “something cool,” think about the message you want to convey.
- Remember the readability
The font you choose must be readable to your audience. Depending on the size of your presentation and the acoustics of the meeting room, your audience in the back row relies on the slides to help them understand what you’re talking about. Even in a fun, or thematic, presentation, you should always choose a font that easily decipherable from a distance. For this reason, you should avoid script-based fonts and stick solely to serif and sans serif.
- Consistency
When using fonts, it’s necessary that you apply them consistently. Changing fonts throughout a presentation might distract and confuse readers. Always use a standard set of fonts and apply them under the same circumstance -- don’t suddenly use title font for bullet points, or your content font as a title.
Grids Allow for Organization
Grids are systems for organizing layouts, making them absolutely essential for planning.
You might be concerned that using guides will limit how creative you can be with your slide design. Remember, guides indicate where content should be placed to create balanced, neat and consistent layouts: it doesn’t restrict how creative that content is.
Types of Grids
There are three most useful types of grid. If you set up your grid correctly, you can easily create alignment and balance in your design.
- A manuscript grid is the most basic grid. It simply is a single rectangle that defines the margins of the format.
- A column grid is typically used in presentation design, as well as in web and user interface (UI) design. The number of columns can be defined as per the requirement of layout.
- Like a column grid, a modular grid has columns, but it also has rows, providing further divisions of space.
